Inspired by an Eastern European folkloric tradition whereby the Spring is heralded by the giving of red and white thread bracelets to protect the wearer (usually children). These are known as Martenica. Once the first signs of new life are visible then the threads are tied to tree branches for the birds to use as nesting material (not recommended on environmental grounds these days).
